Sri Lanka, rich in history has inspired legends, artists, and filmmakers with its stunning ancient ruins and cultural heritage. It has various historical wonders, but the ancient structures across the nation are interesting relics of a vibrant history. After the destruction of Anuradhapura in the 11th century, Polonnaruwa emerged as the new capital of both the Chola invaders and the Sinhalese kingdom. The city and its ruins especially the statues of Gal Vihara stand as a testimony of the history of the island with marked signs of battering.
In essence, a film that could be shot in Polonnaruwa could revolve around the relationship between the Chola and the Sinhalese in showing how power dynamics, coalition, and betrayal were common in this time era.
Another historic site that draws many visitors is Sigiriya, commonly referred to as the Lion Rock. King Kashyapa constructed this gigantic rock cage, which stands approximately 200 meters above the ground, in the 5th century. On the rock face, which is only accessible through climbing the steep stairways, there are paintings and amazing sculptures depicting agriculture, geometric shapes, animals and sophisticated water gardens, and the Ancient Ruins of a palace.

The Dambulla Cave Temple or the Golden Temple of Dambulla is another world heritage site which is good for shooting historical films. Several interlinked caves house Buddhism statues, paintings, and carvings that have been in use since the second century AD. Artists beautifully crafted these paintings and statues, which displayed scenes from the life of Buddha as well as the history of Sri Lanka, on the walls of the caves, creating a sacred and eerie ambience. Filmmakers could use this site for a search for some faith, a ceremony, or even a conspiracy.An overall dimness of the environment in the caves, the amount of shadow and light exhibited on the imagery as well as saturation of colors of the murals may make the general atmosphere suit the primary scenes of the play better. However, Yapahuwa is not as popular as the other sites but it has the potential to provide a location that fits the historical genre of the movie perfectly King Bhuvanekabahu I built Yapahuwa as a fortress and palace in the 13th century. A flight of stairs made out of stone leads to the palace, and its remnants are engraved on the walls of the mountain as Ancient Ruins. The carving details and the vantage point from the top give a feel of forgotten history.
